The park covers Congo’s share of the Virunga Conservation Area bordered by Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. Virunga national park is home to over 300 gorilla families which have been habituated Humba, Kabirizi, Mapuwa, Lulengo, Munyaga, Rugendo, Bageni and Nyakamwe gorilla group. In addition to gorillas, Virunga National park is home to over 706 which make it a haven for birders. Some of the birds to see in Virunga Park include Olive Sunbird, Red Throated alethe, Double toothed barbet, Narrow Tailed Starling,African Olive Pigeon, Skimmers, Shoebills, Ducks and Double billed barbet among others. The park is also home to Blue monkeys, Golden Monkeys, Dent;s Blue Monkey, Black and White Colobus monkeys among others. Virunga Park also shelters the active Nyiragongo Volcano whose summit shelters the world’s largest lava lake. The last eruption of Nyiragongo took place in 2021. You can combine gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo volcano hiking for a more adventurous experience. Day 1: Transfer to Goma
You will be picked up by our company representative from Kigali International airport for a
Drive to Goma – Congo via Gisenyi province, En route stop over at Nyanza King’s palace, Murambi and Butare Genocide memorial sites. Dinner and overnight at Orchid Safari Lodge(luxury), Ihusi Lodge( Midrange) and Hotel Horizon(Budget).
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking Virunga NP
Enjoy breakfast and head for Bukima park offices for morning briefing on the code of conduct when trekking for mountain gorillas, later with your tracking gear, embark on this amazing exercise. After a duration of 3 and 6 hours, you locate the intruding creatures, enjoy an hour with them before retrieving the starting point for your return to the lodge. In the afternoon, if you wish, take a stride to Kibati waterfalls, or engage in a guided forest nature walk. Dinner and overnight at Orchid Safari Lodge(luxury), Ihusi Lodge( Midrange) and Hotel Horizon(Budget).
Day 3: Return to Kigali and Departure
Enjoy your coffee and proceed with your return trip to Kigali for drop off at either a hotel or airport; if you wish, you may take an optional city tour through Kigali.
